കേരളത്തിലെ സജീവമായ ജ്യോതിശാസ്ത്ര പ്രചാരണ സംഘടനയായ  ആസ്ട്രോ കേരളയുടെ സംസ്ഥാന ജനറല്‍ ബോഡി ഈ മാസം 29 (ഞായറാഴ്ച) തൃശൂര്‍ വച്ചു ചേരുവാന്‍ തീരുമാനിച്ചു.ആസ്ട്രോ അംഗങ്ങള്‍, ജില്ലാ - സംസ്ഥാന ഘടകങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നുള്ള ഭാരവാഹികള്‍ തുടങ്ങിയവര്‍ പങ്കെടുക്കും.

• ആസ്ട്രോയെക്കുറിച്ച് അല്‍പ്പം

2009 ലെ അന്താരാഷ്‌ട്ര ജ്യോതിശാസ്ത്ര വര്‍ഷാചരണത്തിന്‍റെ ഭാഗമായി നടത്തിയ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങളുടെയും മറ്റും തുടര്‍ച്ചയായി സംസ്ഥാനമൊട്ടാകെ ശാസ്ത്ര - ജ്യോതിശാസ്ത്ര പ്രചാരണ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങള്‍ സംഘടിപ്പിക്കുകയും എകോപിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്ന ഒരു കൂട്ടായ്മയാണ് അമേച്വര്‍ ആസ്ട്രോണമേഴ്സ് ഓര്‍ഗനൈസേഷന്‍ (ആസ്ട്രോ) കേരള. അധ്യാപകര്‍, വിദ്യാര്‍ഥികള്‍, ശാസ്ത്ര പ്രചാരകര്‍, ശാസ്ത്ര എഴുത്തുകാര്‍ തുടങ്ങി വിവിധ തുറകളില്‍പ്പെട്ടവരും സ്ഥാപനങ്ങളും  ഇതിലെ അംഗങ്ങളാണ്. ആസ്ട്രോ  കഴിഞ്ഞ രണ്ടു വര്‍ഷമായി സംസ്ഥാനമൊട്ടുക്ക് അതിന്‍റെ ജില്ലാ ഘടകങ്ങളിലൂടെ വൈവിധ്യമാര്‍ന്ന ഒട്ടനവധി ശാസ്ത്ര - ജ്യോതിശാസ്ത്ര പ്രചാരണ-വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങള്‍ നടത്തി വരുന്നു. സ്കൂളുകളിലും കോളേജുകളിലും ആസ്ട്രോ ക്ലബ്ബുകളും പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. ഏതാണ്ട് ഇരുന്നൂറില്‍പരം സ്ഥിരം അംഗങ്ങളും അത്രത്തോളം വിദ്യാര്‍ഥി അംഗങ്ങളും ഇപ്പോള്‍ ആസ്ട്രോയ്ക്കുണ്ട്. തിരുവനന്തപുരം ശാസ്ത്ര സാങ്കേതിക മ്യൂസിയം കേന്ദ്രമാക്കിയാണ് ആസ്ട്രോ പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കുന്നത്. ഈ രംഗത്തെ പ്രഗത്ഭരായ ആളുകളാണ് ആസ്ട്രോയെ നയിക്കുന്നത്.

• എന്താണ് ആസ്ട്രോ സംസ്ഥാന ജനറല്‍ ബോഡി?

ആസ്ട്രോ വാര്‍ഷിക സംഗമം.സംസ്ഥാനത്തൊട്ടാകെ വിവിധ ജില്ലകളിലായുള്ള ആസ്ട്രോ പ്രവര്‍ത്തകരുടേയും ഭാരവാഹികളുടേയും കൂടിയിരുപ്പാണ് ആസ്ട്രോ ജനറല്‍ ബോഡിയിലൂടെ ഉദ്ദേശിക്കുന്നത്. കൂടാതെ മറ്റു അഭ്യുദയകാംഷികളെയും ആസ്ട്രോ സുഹൃത്തുക്കളും ശാസ്ത്ര ജ്യോതിശാസ്ത്ര തല്പ്പരരും ഈ കൂട്ടായ്മയ്ക്കായി ഉണ്ടാവും.

ഏപ്രില്‍ 29 ഞായറാഴ്ച തൃശൂര്‍ ഗുരുവായൂര്‍ റോഡിലുള്ള ( ശ്രീ കേരള വര്‍മ്മ കോളേജിനടുത്ത് ) ശാസ്ത്ര സാഹിത്യ പരിഷത്തിന്‍റെ പരിസരകേന്ദ്രം ഹാളില്‍ വച്ചാണ് പരിപാടി.ദൂരെ നിന്നും എത്തുന്നവരുടെ സൗകര്യാര്‍ഥം രാവിലെ പതിനൊന്നു മണിയോടെ ആണ് പരിപാടി തുടങ്ങുക . വൈകുന്നേരം നാലര മണിയോടെ അവസാനിക്കും. പത്ത് മണി മുതല്‍ തന്നെ രജിസ്ട്രേഷനും മറ്റും ഉണ്ടാകും.

പരിസര കേന്ദ്രത്തില്‍ എത്തിച്ചേരുവാനായി തൃശൂര്‍ ഗുരുവായൂര്‍ റോഡിലുള്ള കേരള വര്‍മ്മ കോളേജ്‌ ബസ്‌ സ്റ്റോപ്പില്‍ ഇറങ്ങിയാല്‍ അവിടെ നിന്നും 300 മീറ്റര്‍ മുന്നിലേക്ക്‌ നടക്കുമ്പോള്‍  ഇടതു വശത്തായി പരിഷദ് ലൈന്‍ കാണാം.തൃശൂര്‍ ടൌണ്‍ സെന്‍ററില്‍ നിന്നും ബസ്‌ സ്റ്റാന്‍റില്‍ നിന്നുള്ള ഓട്ടോ ചാര്‍ജ്‌ 20 രൂപയാണ്. റയില്‍വെ സ്റ്റേഷനില്‍ നിന്നും ഏകദേശം അത്ര തന്നെ.വിദൂര ജില്ലകളില്‍ നിന്നും എത്തുന്നവര്‍ ട്രെയിന്‍ - ബസ്‌ ടിക്കറ്റുകള്‍ മുന്‍കൂട്ടി ഉറപ്പാക്കുന്നത് നന്നായിരിക്കും.കേന്ദ്രം നമ്പര്‍ : 0487-2381084

ഇന്ധനം തീരുന്ന നക്ഷത്രം ഗുരുത്വാകര്‍ഷണം മൂലം അതിദ്രുതം പൊട്ടിയമരുന്ന അവസ്ഥയാണ് സൂപ്പര്‍നോവ. എല്ലാ സൂപ്പര്‍നോവകളുടെയും സ്‌ഫോടന തീവ്രത ഏറെക്കുറെ സമാനമാണ്. അതുകൊണ്ടുതന്നെ ഭൂമിയില്‍ നിന്നു ദൃശ്യമാകുന്ന പ്രകാശമാനം അവയിലേക്കുള്ള അകലത്തിന്റെ സൂചകമായെടുക്കാം. പ്രകാശരാജിയിലെ വര്‍ണവ്യത്യാസത്തില്‍ നിന്ന് എത്രവേഗത്തിലാണവ നീങ്ങുന്നതെന്നും മനസ്സിലാക്കാം. കൂടുതല്‍ ദൂരത്തിലുള്ള സൂപ്പര്‍നോവകള്‍ അടുത്തുള്ളവയെ അപേക്ഷിച്ചു മന്ദഗതിയിലാണ് നീങ്ങുന്നത് എന്നായിരുന്നു അതുവരെയുള്ള ധാരണ. എന്നാല്‍, ദൂരം കൂടുന്നതിനനുസരിച്ച് അവ അകലുന്നതിന്റെ വേഗവും കൂടിവരികയാണെന്ന് മൂന്നു ഗവേഷകരും കണ്ടെത്തി. പ്രപഞ്ചം വികസിക്കുന്നതിന്റെ വേഗം കൂടിക്കൂടി വരികയാണ് എന്നാണതിന്നര്‍ഥം. പ്രപഞ്ച വിജ്ഞാനീയത്തില്‍ വഴിത്തിരിവായി മാറിയ ഈ കണ്ടെത്തല്‍ അസ്വസ്ഥ ജനകമായ ചോദ്യങ്ങള്‍ക്കും അതിനുത്തരമായി പുതിയ സിദ്ധാന്തങ്ങള്‍ക്കും വഴിയൊരുക്കി. അതിവേഗം വികസിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന പ്രപഞ്ചം സാന്ദ്രത നന്നെ കുറഞ്ഞ് തണുത്തുറഞ്ഞ ശൂന്യതയായി അവസാനിക്കാനുള്ള സാധ്യതയെക്കുറിച്ച് അതോടെയാണ് ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞര്‍ ചിന്തിച്ചുതുടങ്ങിയത്. പ്രപഞ്ച ഗോളങ്ങള്‍ വികസിച്ച് അകലുമ്പോഴുണ്ടാകുന്ന പ്രാപഞ്ചിക ശൂന്യതയില്‍ ശ്യാമദ്രവ്യം എന്ന അജ്ഞാത പദാര്‍ഥം വന്നു നിറയുമെന്ന സിദ്ധാന്തമായിരുന്നു അടുത്തത്. ഗുരുത്വാകര്‍ഷണത്തെ അതിജീവിച്ച് ആകാശ ഗോളങ്ങളെ ഇങ്ങനെ വലിച്ചകറ്റുന്നത് ശ്യാമോര്‍ജമാണെന്ന ആശയം അതൊടൊപ്പം വന്നു. ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ സിദ്ധാന്തമനുസരിച്ച് പ്രപഞ്ചത്തിന്റെ 70 ശതമാനവും ശ്യാമോര്‍ജമാണ്. 25 ശതമാനം ശ്യാമദ്രവ്യമാണ്. അഞ്ചു ശതമാനം മാത്രമാണ് നമുക്കറിയാവുന്ന പദാര്‍ഥങ്ങള്‍. ബെര്‍ക്ക്‌ലിയിലുള്ള കാലിഫോര്‍ണിയ സര്‍വകലാശാലയിലെ സോള്‍ പേള്‍മറ്റര്‍ (52) 1988-ല്‍ തുടങ്ങിയ സൂപ്പര്‍നോവ കോസ്‌മോളജി പദ്ധതിയുടെ തലവനാണ്. ഓസ്‌ട്രേലിയന്‍ നാഷണല്‍ യൂണിവേഴ്‌സിറ്റിയിലെ റീസും(41) ജോണ്‍സ് ഹോപ്കിന്‍സ് യൂണിവേഴ്‌സിറ്റി ഓഫ് സ്‌പേസ് ടെലിസ്‌കോപ്പ് സയന്‍സ് ഇന്‍സ്റ്റിറ്റിയൂട്ടിലെ ഷ്മിഡറ്റും(44) 1994-ല്‍ സമാന ഗവേഷണവുമായി ഹൈ-സെഡ് സൂപ്പര്‍നോവ സെര്‍ച്ച് ടീമിന്റെ ഭാഗമായി. പ്രപഞ്ചവിജ്ഞാനീയത്തില്‍ വഴിത്തിരിവായി മാറിയ ഞെട്ടിക്കുന്ന കണ്ടെത്തലായിരുന്നു ഇതെന്ന് നൊബേല്‍ സമ്മാന ജൂറി വിലയിരുത്തി

EARTH AND MOON MAKE STARS OF SON AND DAD

Thanks to his image entitled ‘Half-Moon Terminator’ the 14-year-old’s award-winning effort taken from a rooftop in Umm Al Hassam has resulted in him being selected as one of the ‘50 favourite’ Canon photographers from around the world.

His celebrated photograph also won him ‘Young Astronomy Photographer 2010 – highly-commended’ in an international competition run by Royal Observatory, Greenwich and BBC Sky at Night magazine from London.

The picture has been published in this month’s special 50th edition of camera-maker Canon’s magazine PhotoPlus.

Carly Drew, staff writer at PhotoPlus, wrote in an email that although Jathin’s father and ace photographer, Premjith Narayanan’s photographs were also shortlisted, only Jathin’s was selected. She said: “The first of Jathin’s images that we looked at were his Formula One shots, so that was our initial choice, but having had a look at your website, we were presented with so many more options!

“As his moon shot had won an award and there was such a great story behind it, there really was no question that it had to go in.”

The moon was back on his mind too for the recent total lunar eclipse which had photographers across the island grabbing their cameras to capture images. The young photographer who is a Class 10 student at Asian School, Umm Al Hassam, attempted to capture the different facets of the moon during the event. This time he used a professional SLR camera that was mounted on an eight-inch Reflective Telescope manufactured by Celestron with an inbuilt GPS.

Sharing an exclusive photograph he captured during 100-minutes of skyward study, Jathin said: “This photo was taken through the telescope 10 minutes before the end of the eclipse. In this case the shadow was moving from left to right and that is the reason it is more illuminated on the left as it is nearing the border of the dark shadow.”

Guiding him in his work was his father Premjith, general manager of Alstom Middle East. He said: “It was just like the car rallies with combined driving by the driver and the navigator. Jathin in this case was the driver and I was simply giving him information from the laptop.

“So, it wasn’t just photography involved here ... it was a combination of many activities. A lot of knowledge about the eclipse is important. Related books and software are of great help. It helps you make your plans and be prepared confidently.

“In this totality period when the moon is dark, it occults (when one object is hidden by another object that passes between it and the observer) many stars which are located light years away. It’s a challenge to take the occultation photos as you need to give the correct exposures to get both the celestial objects clearly.

“As the telescope is tracking only the moon and not the star and there is relative movement of both the objects and in a short period you have to decide the correct camera exposures and get the right image. Jathin has managed to get some nice shots.”

Premjith is a passionate photographer who takes every opportunity he gets to concentrate on travel photography.

Among his latest achievements is the publication of his image - ‘Pelican in flight’, shot in Kenya, in last month’s edition of PhotoPlus under the category ‘Inspirations’ and entitled ‘Great Canon Photographers in Action’.

He said: “It’s an honour to be put in the same platform as professionals from around the world.”

There were widely spread rumors and  fear among the people over chances of natural disasters and occurrence of unusual phenomenon because of  'Super Moon effect'  these days.Speculations have moved the goalposts to within 1 or 2 weeks of a supermoon to suggest a causal relationship with specific natural disasters such as the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. Such a widening of the effect window is unjustified since the Moon was further from the Earth than average, making a super moon effect impossible.

A supermoon is bigger and brighter than an ordinary full moon. The reason: the moon’s orbit around the Earth is elliptical, not round. And so when the elliptical path passes closest to Earth a full moon becomes 14 per cent wider and 30 per cent brighter than an average full moon. Not since 1992 has the moon passed as close to Earth as happened on Saturday night.

AASTRO Kerala took effective efforts  and organised activities at various levels to debunk this controversy.AASTRO Kozhikkode chapter organised classes and demonstration sessions thorough out the district.hundereds of people gathered to take in their fill of the ‘supermoon' that rose on Saturday night sky.Observations were arranged in places like Eranjikkal, Mananchira, Thondayadu, Mukkam, Balussery, Nadakkavu, Perambra,Madappally,Kuttikkaattoor,Kundamangalam and so on.Programmes were organised in different educational institutions too.

Some studies have reported a weak correlation between lunar activity and shallow, very low intensity earthquakes. However, no evidence has been found of any correlation with major earthquakes.The 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami is the only earthquake of 8.0 magnitude or greater to have occurred within 2 weeks of the 14 extreme supermoons from 1900 to the present date,suggesting that the claim of a supermoon effect on the incidence of large-scale earthquakes is unjustified.

കഴിഞ്ഞ കുറെ ദിവസങ്ങളായി ഞാന്‍ കേള്‍ക്കുന്ന കഥകളുടെ ചുരുക്കമാണ് മേല്‍ എഴുതിയത്. ആളുകള്‍ക്ക് പറഞ്ഞു ബഹളം വെക്കാന്‍ മറ്റൊരു വിഷയം. പക്ഷെ പല അടിസ്ഥാന ശാസ്ത്ര സത്യങ്ങളെയും കുറിച്ച് പോതുജനത്തിനുള്ള അറിവില്ലായ്മയുടെ തെളിവ് കൂടിയാണ് ഇത്തരം കഥകളുടെ പ്രചരണം.

ഇനി ഈ കഥയുടെ പിന്നിലെ സത്യം അറിയാന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കാം...

ചന്ദ്രന്‍ ഭൂമിയുടെ ഒരു ഉപഗ്രഹം എന്ന നിലയില്‍ ഭൂമിയെ വലം വെക്കാന്‍ വിധിക്കപ്പെട്ട ആളാണല്ലോ. ചന്ദ്രന്റെ പരിക്രമണ പഥം അഥവാ ഓര്‍ബിറ്റ് ദീര്‍ഘ വൃത്തമാണ്. അതുകൊണ്ടുതന്നെ ഭൂമിയില്‍ നിന്നും ചന്ദ്രനിലേക്കുള്ള ദൂരം മാറിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കും.

ചന്ദ്രന്‍ ഭൂമിയോട് ഏറ്റവും അടുത്ത് വരുന്ന സ്ഥാനം perigee എന്നും ഏറ്റവും അകലെ പോകുന്ന സ്ഥാനം apogee എന്നും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു(ചിത്രം)

ചന്ദ്രന്‍ ഭൂമിയെ ഒരുതവണ വലം വെക്കാന്‍ 27.32 ദിവസം എടുക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. അതായത് 27.32 ദിവസത്തില്‍ ഒരിക്കല്‍ വീതം ചന്ദ്രന്‍ പെരിഗീയിലൂടെ കടന്നു പോകുന്നുണ്ട്. perigee യില്‍ എത്തുമ്പോള്‍ ചന്ദ്രന്‍ ഭൂമിയില്‍ ചെലുത്തുന്ന ആകര്‍ഷണബലം apogee നിന്നും ചെലുതുന്നതിനേക്കാള്‍ ഏകദേശം 20 ശതമാനം കൂടുതലായിരിക്കും എന്നത് സത്യമാണ്. പക്ഷെ വേലിയേറ്റങ്ങളുടെ ശക്തി കൂടുന്നതുപോലുള്ള ചില ചെറിയ മാറ്റങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് അപ്പുറം ഒന്നും ചെയ്യാന്‍ ഇത് പര്യാപ്തമല്ല.

വരുന്ന മാര്‍ച്ച്‌ 19 നു സംഭവിക്കുന്നത് സൂപ്പര്‍ മൂണ്‍ എന്ന പ്രതിഭാസമാണ്. പതിവിലും വലിപ്പം കൂടിയതായി ചന്ദ്രബിംബം കാണപ്പെടുന്ന അവസ്ഥ ആയതുകൊണ്ടാണ്‌ ആ പേര്‍ അതിനു കൈവന്നത്. ചന്ദ്രന്‍ പെരിഗീയില്‍ വരുന്ന എല്ലാ അവസരങ്ങളിലും ഇത് സംഭവിക്കാറില്ല. അതിനു ചന്ദ്രന്റെ പെരിഗീയില്‍ എത്തലും പൂര്‍ണ ചന്ദ്രനും ഒരുമിച്ച് സംഭവിക്കണം. ചന്ദ്രന്റെ വൃദ്ധി -ക്ഷയങ്ങള്‍ (ചന്ദ്രക്കലമുതല്‍ പൂര്‍ണചന്ദ്രന്‍ വരെയുള്ള ചന്ദ്രന്റെ രൂപമാറ്റങ്ങള്‍) യഥാര്‍ഥത്തില്‍ സൂര്യനാല്‍ പ്രകാശിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ചന്ദ്രന്റെ ഭാഗം, ഭൂമിയെ അപേക്ഷിച്ച് അതിന്റെ സ്ഥാനം മാറുന്നതിനാല്‍ പല അളവുകളില്‍ നമുക്ക് ദ്രിശ്യമാകുന്നതാണ്.

ചിത്രം കാണുക. അതില്‍ ചന്ദ്രന്റെ സ്ഥാനവും അതാതു സ്ഥാനങ്ങളില്‍ ചന്ദ്രന്‍ ഭൂമിയില്‍ എങ്ങനെ കാണപ്പെടും എന്നുമാണ് കാണിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. ചന്ദ്രന്‍ കൃത്യമായി സൂര്യനും ഭൂമിക്കും ഇടയില്‍ വരുന്ന സമയം ചന്ദ്രന്റെ പ്രകാശിതമായ ഭാഗം നമുക്ക് കാണാന്‍ കഴിയില്ല. അതാണ്‌ അമാവാസി. അതുപോലെ ഭൂമി കൃത്യം സൂര്യനും ചന്ദ്രനും ഇടയില്‍ വരുമ്പോള്‍ പൌര്‍ണമി സംഭവിക്കും എന്ന് കാണാന്‍ പ്രയാസമില്ലല്ലോ.

ചുരുക്കി പറഞ്ഞാല്‍, സൂര്യന്റെ സ്ഥാനം കൂടി അനുയോജ്യമായിരുന്നാല്‍ മാത്രമേ 'സൂപ്പര്‍ മൂണ്‍' സംഭവിക്കൂ. ചന്ദ്രന്‍ പെരിഗീയില്‍ ആയിരിക്കുകയും, ഭൂമിയും സൂര്യനുമായി നേര്‍രേഖയില്‍ ആയിരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുമ്പോള്‍ സൂര്യന്റെ ആകര്‍ഷണം കാരണം ചന്ദ്രന്റെ ഓര്‍ബിറ്റ് നു അല്പം 'വലിവ്' സംഭവിക്കുകയും തുടര്‍ന്ന് ചന്ദ്രന്‍ ഒരല്പം കൂടി ഭൂമിയോട് അടുത്തു വരുകയും ചെയ്യും. അതാണ്‌ ഈ മാര്‍ച്ച്‌ 19 നു സംഭവിക്കാന്‍ പോകുന്നത്. അന്ന് നമ്മുടെ അമ്പിളിമാമന്‍ കാണാന്‍ കൂടുതല്‍ സുന്ദരനായിരിക്കും...

ഭൂമിയില്‍ ഇതിനു മുന്‍പ് ഉണ്ടായതിലും അപ്പുറം വലിയ ദുരന്തങ്ങളൊന്നും സൃഷ്ട്ടിക്കാന്‍ ഈ പ്രതിഭാസത്തിനു കഴിവില്ല. പിന്നെ ഇത്തരം ലോകാവസാന കഥകള്‍ പ്രച്ചരിപ്പിക്കുന്നതുകൊന്ദ് കുറെ പേരെങ്കിലും ഇതിനെ പറ്റി കൂടുതല്‍ പഠിക്കാന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കും... പിന്നെ എന്നെ പോലുള്ളവര്‍ക്ക് ഇങ്ങനെ ചില പ്രചാരവേലകള്‍ കൂടി നടത്തുകയും ആവാമല്ലോ...

URANUS: Very low in West. The planet will be on conjunction on 21st March.

JUPITER: Getting low in the Western sky and will be paired with Mercury from March 12 to March 20.

SATURN: Rises around 9:30 pm at the month’s beginning and well placed in the sky at the time of midnight. The planet will show 19 arc seconds wide disc during March.

VENUS: The brightest planet will be just 1 degree from the Moon on the morning of 1st March.It will be nicely paired with the Crescent Moon on the morning of 1stMarch and will be just 10’ apart from Neptune on the morning of 27th March.

NEPTUNE: Will emerge from the eastern morning sky by March 8. It will be very close to brilliant Venus on 27th March.

MERCURY: Will climb up in the Western evening sky around 8-9 March. The inner-most planet will be just 21’ from Uranus on the evening of 9th March but very low near the Western horizon. The planet will be paired with Jupiter during mid-March and will be at Greatest Elongation on 23rd March.
