This time it was a talk lead by Dr. Ajith Prasad from M G College on 'Extraplanetary objects in the solar system'. Usually the word 'solar system' brings to our mind the sun and the eight planets around it. We often forget the other members of sun's family such as dwarf planets, asteroids, comets, jupiter trojans, oort clouds etc.

Dr. Ajith Prasad gave a brief outline of such objects. There followed a discusion on the topic where teachers, students and other interested people in the subject participated. After the session, there was a short observation session on the mercy of the available sky.

വര്‍ഷങ്ങളായി ശാസ്ത്രകേരളത്തിലൂടെയും മറ്റും മലയാളികള്‍ക്ക് പരിചിതമാണ് ചിരുതക്കുട്ടിയുടെ നിഷ്ക്കളങ്കമായ കൌതുകങ്ങളും ചോദ്യങ്ങളും. ശാസ്ത്ര - സാമൂഹ്യ രംഗങ്ങളിലെ ഗൌരവമാര്‍ന്ന വിഷയങ്ങളും സംശയങ്ങളും ഒക്കെ ലളിതവും രസകരവുമായ രീതിയില്‍ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിലെ പാപ്പൂട്ടി മാഷുടെ എഴുത്തിന്‍റെ അസാമാന്യമായ പാടവമാണ് ചിരുതക്കുട്ടിയുടെ നിഷ്ക്കളങ്കമായ വാക്കുകളിലൂടെ കാണാന്‍ കഴിയുക.

വിവിധ സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ കോളേജുകളില്‍ ഭൌതികശാസ്ത്ര വിഭാഗം തലവനായും സംസ്ഥാന സര്‍വ വിജ്ഞാനകോശ ഇന്‍സ്റ്റിട്യൂട്ട് ഡയറക്ടറായും ഒക്കെ സ്തുത്യര്‍ഹമായ സേവനമാണ് അദ്ദേഹം നടത്തിയിട്ടുള്ളത്. കേരള ശാസ്ത്ര സാഹിത്യ പരിഷത്ത് നിര്‍വാഹക സമിതി അംഗം,ശാസ്ത്രകേരളം മാസികയുടെ എഡിറ്റര്‍,ആസ്ട്രോ കേരളയുടെ പ്രസിഡണ്ട് എന്നീ ചുമതലകളും അദ്ദേഹം നിര്‍വഹിക്കുന്നു.പാപ്പൂട്ടി മാഷുടെ ഈ പുരസ്കാര നേട്ടത്തില്‍ ഏറ്റവും അഭിമാനിക്കുന്നത് ആസ്ട്രോ തന്നെ. ശാസ്ത്രപ്രചാരണ രംഗത്ത് പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് കുട്ടികള്‍ക്കിടയിലെ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് ഈ പുരസ്കാരലബ്ധി ഊര്‍ജം പകരുമെന്നതില്‍ സംശയമില്ല. പ്രിയപ്പെട്ട പാപ്പൂട്ടി മാഷിനു ഈ വേളയില്‍ മുഴുവന്‍ ആസ്ട്രോ കുടുംബത്തിന്‍റെയും ആശംസകള്‍. മാഷുടെ ഈ മെയില്‍ വിലാസം : pappootty@gmail.com

The session was handled by Dr. K C Ajith Prasad,Professor of Physics,MG College, who described interesting facts and ideas  about Binary stars. He started with the history of observation of binary stars and then talked about their various kinds and its classification.  The importance of binary stars and the methods used to gather information from them were given stress in his lecture.

The lecture was followed by an active discussion where eminent AASTRO veterans like Shri. Krishna Warrier added more points. Around 20 people attended the session. The next session will be on first Thursday of September

ഉദ്ഘാടനം ചൊയ്തു. BRC ട്രെയ്നറും പരിഷത്ത് പ്രവര്‍ത്തകനുമായ കെ.ടി.ജോര്‍ജ് ആണ് പരിപാടികള്‍ക്ക് നേതൃത്വം നല്‍കിയത് .

 

ജൂലായ് 16 ന്‌ നടക്കാവ് ഗേള്‍സ് ഹയര്‍ സെക്കണ്ടറി സ്കൂളില്‍ വച്ച് നടന്ന മറ്റൊരു പരിപാടി 'നമ്മുടെ ആകാശം' എന്ന വിഷയത്തെ അടിസ്ഥാനമാക്കി ക്ളാസെടുത്തുകൊണ്ട് ആസ്ട്രോ സംസ്ഥാന പ്രസിഡണ്ട്   പ്രൊഫ. കെ പാപ്പുട്ടി ശില്‍പശാല ഉദ്ഘാടനം ചെയ്തു. തുടര്‍ന്ന് ടെലിസ്കോപ്പ് ഉപയോഗിക്കാനുള്ള പ്രായോഗിക പരിശീനവും ,സ്റ്റെല്ലേറിയം എന്ന സോഫ്റ്റ്‌ വെയര്‍ ആകാശ നിരീക്ഷണത്തിനായി  ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നതിന്നുള്ള പരിശീലനവും നടക്കുകയുണ്ടായി. പരിപാടിയില്‍ ജില്ലയില്‍ നിന്നുള്ള നാല്‍പതോളം അദ്ധ്യാപകര്‍  പങ്കെടുത്തു. ജില്ലാ നിര്‍വാഹക സമിതി അംഗം കെ.വിജയന്‍ സ്വാഗതവും അനീഷ് മണാശ്ശേരി നന്ദിയും പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ചു.

 

ചാന്ദ്ര ദിനവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട ജില്ലയിലെ വിവിധ കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളില്‍ ആസ്ട്രോ പരിപാടികള്‍ സംഘടിപ്പിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി

The session will be handled by Mr K P Prabhakaran, who is an expert in home-made telescopes. He will present a demonstration and sky watching session with the aid of his own telescope. There is a common belief that a good quality telescope is a highly expensive one and not everyone can access it. Mr. Prabhakaran wish to convey the point that a good telescope is reachable to anyone without much expense.

The monthly public lecture session of May 2011 was held on 5th May, 5.30 pm at our usual venue of Priyadarshini Planetarium, PMG, Thiruvananthapuram. This time it was a presentation and demonstration on how to utilize Stellarium software for an effective sky watching. The session was handled by Mr.Vaisakhan Thampi and he pointed out  the key features of the software and the ways in which they can be utilized effectively. Students, teachers and other interested public were present.

Stellarium is an open source software, which can be downloaded installed, modified and redistributed by anyone. It renders a realistic sky visible from any part of the world at any instant of time, showing more than 600000 stars, respective constellation lines in 12 different cultures, their labels and even constellation art. It incorporates planets and their satellites with a very good zoom capacity. One can download Stellarium from here and its absolutely free !!
