AASTRO Thiruvananthapuram had its regular monthly lecture of May on 3rd, Thursday at its usual venue, Science and Technology Museum. The session based on the Transit of Venus was lead by Shri. Krishna Warrier. He gave a detailed picture of the various transit phenomena occuring on sky. He also mentioned the various historical aspects of the Transit of venus, an example being the measurement of Astronomical Unit. The lecture was followed by an active discussion where other members shared some of their experiences and anecdotes about the transit phenomena. Later, the ways in which coming TOV 2012 can be celebrated were discussed.

Chaandradinam Celebration @ Thiruvananthapuram attracts big student mass
The Chaandradina Celebration named "Chandrolsavam" by AASTRO Thiruvananthapuram, in association with Sarva Siksha abhiyan(SSA) and KSSTM succeeded in attracting a big mass of students.
The program was conducted at the seminar hall of Priyadarshini Planetarium, PMG, Thiruvananthapuram. Shri. Arul Jerald Prakash, Director, Kerala Science and Technology Museum, formally inaugurated the event. In his inaugural speech, he said we are living in such an unscientific society where the validity of lunar landing is still suspected and so the growing students should develop a scientific temper. 
It was followed by three lecture sessions. The first one was lead by Shri. Ramesh who talked on "While looking at the sky". He gave a brief outline of the various wonders of the sky and also of the relevance of the World Year of Chemistry.
The next session named "Our Moon" was handled by Shri. Vaisakhan Thampi. He talked about the various aspects of our only natural satellite like its rise and set, phases, eclipses, how it looks like through a telescope and also how it will be on Moon. What followed was another interesting session by Dr. C. P. Aravindakshan named "The chemistry of Moon". He talked about the precious minerals on moon and other chemical aspects of moon in a lucid way to the children.
More than 250 people including school children, teachers and parents attended the session.
Summer school for Physics PG students @ Thiruvananthapuram

The Department of physics has a glorious history stretching back over a century.The magnificent building of the department in colonial British architecture style was built in 1906.
University College Physics Society,which is a registered unity of old students and teachers of the Department of Physics,Trivandrum University College will organise a 10 day summer school for post graduate students in physics during April - May.The school offers a blend of advanced topics in mathematical Physics,Quantum Physics,Theoretical physics etc. In addition to lecture classes,practical sessions on electronics are also arranged.The total intake of students are limited to 40 only.The programme is dated from 25th April to May 5th.Venue will be the Department of Physics,University College,Thiruvananthapuram.

AASTRO Monthly Meet @ Planetarium
AASTRO office bearers,members and enthusiasts , as a part of its monthly meet up, will gather at Kerala state Science & technology Museum on Wednesday, 5.30 PM. AASTRO will arrange public lectures and discussions regarding vivid topics in astronomy, astrophysics,physics, space science and allied subjects. For July, we have a presentation on Relativity theory by Shri.K.S.Skaria IPS followed by a discussion on it. Eminent personalities, AASTRO Members, planetarium officials, students and other subject enthusiasts will take part. the talk is open for public too. Trivandrum Chapter Meet on 13th May
AASTRO Thiruvananthapuram Chapter will have a meet on Thursday,13th may at Kerala State Science & Technology Museum and Priyadarshini Planetarium,PMG junction.AASTRO President Prof.K.Pappootty will preside the meeting and Planetarium director Shri.Arun Jerald Prakash and other eminent personalities will make their presence.upcoming and ongoing activities and programmes will be reviewed and plans for school & college activities will be shaped on the course.
